Celebrate Huntsville Black Restaurant Week June 8th-19th, 2023

Right on time for Juneteenth, June 8th-19th is Huntsville Black Restaurant Week! More info at https://www.brwhsv.com/

As we celebrate Black Restaurant Week, for your convenience, I wanted to highlight a few black-owned eateries that I've been to myself, personally.

When my church, wew.stmarkhsv.com did the Daniel's Fast this year for 40 days for Lent, I had to try some black-owned vegan restaurants, starting first with my girl Nikia Lightfoot's restaurant, www.vujeeveganllc.com. It's currently located at The Foundation 4701 Meridian Street Huntsville, AL, near the campus of Alabama A&M. They have amazing "burgers," fries and "chik'n nuggets" but at that time because of the Daniel Fast restrictions during Lent, I could only have the chili. Chile! It still blessed me good!!! Lots of flavor, without being too salty, it made it easy to forget that I wasn't eating meat! There's vegan cheese and sour cream, and sweet corn bread that comes with it too! You can also follow Vujee Vegan on social media to find out where their brand new food truck is serving the people. Highly recommend!

Next, I was meeting with a Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated soror of mine for lunch, and sticking with the theme of vegan and black-owned, went to www.ckb360wellness.com located at 3077 Leeman Ferry Suite I. It was a little tricky to find, but once I found it, it was such a cute little cafe owned by the sweetest couple. And the food was slamming! I had an oxtail (jackfruit) platter, rice and beans and fresh cucumbers that the owner sliced just for me. My main reason for recommending their food is that it is so fresh and well-seasoned! It tastes homecooked, but has such a variety of ingredients that I don't usually make the effort to make at home--if I knew how to cook like them. You will not regret making the effort to check them out. Just go for lunch Tuesday-Friday, but I recommend calling first.

Shifting away from vegan eats, it's easier for me to focus on places that you can go to in person, that has more extended hours and a brick and mortar location.

My pick for brunch is www.superherochefshsv.com which features "hero" (vegetarian/vegan) and a "villian" (meat-based) menu options. Centrally located in Mid-City off University Drive, next to Stars and Strikes, it's both family-friendly and a good spot to brunch with friends for their bottomless mimosas. I LOVED the waffle bites and the fried chicken. Make reservations for no wait.

My pick for classic soul food is Betty Mae's on North Memorial Parkway. I love their fried fish, collard greens and candied yams. Bring a snack and some patience, because you will be waiting! I have never NOT seen long lines. But the food is worth the wait. You even get Kool-Aid and red velvet cake (or other dessert options) with your meal. Oh and they're open every day of the week 11am-3pm, but closed on Saturdays.

My pick for a nice dinner out is Catch 25 https://catch25-hsv.com/ at 230 Holmes Avenue NE Huntsville, AL. With its Downtown location, and white tablecloth setting, you can dress up with your boo for this place. They also have a full bar with exotic cocktails for those who indulge. And they are open for dinner every night except Sunday (closed all day on Mondays).

Bon appetit, and Happy Black Restaurant Week, Huntsville!
